Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Swachh Bharat Mission is a nation-wide campaign in India for the period 2014 to 2019 that aims to clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of India's cities, towns, and rural areas. The campaign's official name is in Hindi and translates to "Clean India Mission" in English

Bharat or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Campaign Clear India) is a national level
campaign by the Government of India covering 4041 statutory towns to clean the
streets, roads and infrastructure of the country.
This campaign was officially launched on 2 October 2014 at
Rajghat, New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself wielded
broom and cleaned a road. The campaign is India's biggest ever cleanliness
drive and 3 million government employees and schools and colleges students of
India participated in this event.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched by Prime Minister of
India Narendra Modi on 2 Oct. 2014, Gandhi Jayanti. On this day, Modi addressed
the citizens of India in a public gathering held at Rajpath, asked everyone to
join this campaign. Later on this day, Modi himself swepta alance pavement at
Valmiki Basti, a colony of sanitation workers, near Rajpat.
Indian President Pranab Mukherjee asked every Indian to
spend 100 hours annually in this drive. This campaign is supported by Border Security
Force, India and Indian Air Force.

This campaign aims to accomplish the vision of 'clean India'
by 2nd October 2019, 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and is expected to cost over
Rs. 62,000 crore. The campaign was described as 'beyond politics and 'inspired
by patriotism.'
More than 3 million government employees and schools and
colleges students of India are going to participate in this event.

Modi government selected nine notable public figures
to propagate this campaign. Some of these notable personalities were: Anil
Ambani, Sachin Tendulkar, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Baba Ramdev, Kamala
Hassan, Mridula Sinha, Sashi Tharoor, Team of TV Serial Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chasma.
Indian film actor Amir Khan supported and encouraged this
initiative and told that he would be happy if he is invited into this campaign.
A Swachh Bharat Run was organized at the Rashtrapati Bhavan
on 2 October 2014. According to a statement from the Rashtrapati Bhavan around
1500 people participated and the event was flagged off by President Pranab
Mukherjee. Participants in the run included officers and sice, as well as
their families.
"All the governments in this country have made one or
the other children effort to do this work. Several political, social and
cultural organizations have made efforts in this direction. I greet all those,
who have worked, Modi said in his 25-minute address at Rajpath, where he
formally kicked off the five-year-long campaign that will cover 4,041 statutory
towns.
Administering a pledge to people to make India clean, he
said he that this task is not the responsibility only of safai karamcharis or
the government but of all the 125 crore Indians.
The Prime Minister said that he is aware that the criticism
of this programme will begin in just a few days but said he is prepared for
this exuding confidence that the countrymen will not let him down.
Recalling that he had congratulated all governments even
from the ramparts of Red Fort, Modi said, "even today from this stage, I
greet and salute all the governments-central, state and municipal, social organizations
which have worked in this direction, whether they are leaders from Sarvodaya or
workers of Seva Dal. I launch this programme with their blessings.”
