STUDENT AND POLITICS
Politics means the way in which a government is run. In the present time, the government is run on party lines. The party having the majority forms the government, and the party in minority forms the opposition. This party-war goes on and on. The opposition groups find fault with the government. It criticizes the policy of the ruling party. Politics embraces every field of national activity. Thus students must not keep themselves completely detached from it. Politics occupies a prominent place in the life of the people. It has its effect upon the life of men. Therefore, education itself would be incomplete without the knowledge of politics. But to have the critical knowledge of political science is one thing, to take part in active politics is something very different. Practical knowledge is always good but this does not hold good as far as the case of students is concerned.
Student life is meant for study. A student must necessary there first and the foremost duty is to study. The guardians bear a lot of hardship to provide money for the education of their wards. There is a definite period in life when a man can get an education. If the students waste their time in other pursuits they will have to repent in later life. Without proper education, a man cannot succeed in any walk of life. Political life is a very tough life Therefore students should check their temptation of being a leader. They should pay full attention to their studies. They must set themselves heart and soul to the pursuit of knowledge.
The mind of a student is not mature. If he plunges into active politics will be exploited by political parties. He will simply be a play-thing in the hands of the political leaders. He will not be able to take any decision independently. Students constitute a new generation of leaders. No prosper with second-rate intellectuals. Hence acquiring knowledge would be the first and foremost duty of the students. They must ane o country can the keep themselves away from active politics.
Mahatma Gandhi gave a call to the students to participate in the struggle for independence. But it does not prove that students should now and it is the nod of always take part in active politics. At that time India was under a foreign- rule. The situation has changed now. India is a free nation now and is no longer desirable that students should come forward to participate in political activities. But when the time becomes abnormal it is the duty of every student to take part in it.
Our young men and women must have political consciousness. In order to be responsible citizens of a democratic republic, they have to be familiar with the politics of the country. Politics instills in the student's apolitical awareness, a consciousness of his right and duties and prepares them to guide the destinies of the country when they grow into full-fledged citizens. They should be imbibed with an ever-burning zeal for serving their motherland and prove themselves ideal sons and daughters of mother India. But at the same time, they should be aware of the narrow party-politics and their advocates and authors. They should first cultivate a sense of discipline and a political consciousness which are the requisites of democracy. Politics, indeed, must inspire them but should not dominate their thought and action to a damaging point
