                Water and air-the two essentials of life- have been mixed with so many undesirable pollutants, so that fresh air and fresh water have become almost impossible to enjoy in densely populated cities of the world. This brings, in turn, the incurable diseases to life and the danger of decaying of the beautiful things made by man on this earth.

                Today the most beautiful monument of the Taj faces the danger of losing its milky whiteness under the mantle of the industrial smoke of Mathura refinery of petroleum crude. So, the pollution has two forms, viz, (I) the pollution of water, (ii) the pollution of air. The pollution of water is mainly caused by surface water such as that of rivers, tanks or lakes. Rainwater, if collected directly from the clouds, is the purest form of water. Underground water, too, is out of assimilation of any kind of impurities. But the surface water is mixed, up with many kinds of impurities due to the discharge of industries including dye, sugar-molasses, cellulose, proteins, oil and petroleum-based industries, hospitals, cit sewages which is discharged to the rivers and other water resources. Inorganic substances like cadmium, iron, magnesium may be contained in water, but their concentration above the recommended standards is always harmful.

                Waterborne diseases are caused by any of the above kinds of pollution. A serious type of jaundice in Delhi by the adulteration of pathogenic micro-organisms with the tap-water lines. This causes a heavy toll of deaths too. Pollution in the air is also caused likewise. Today industries are gushing out a heavy amount of carbon monoxide from petrol, diesel and jet engine. Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen-peroxide, Hydrocarbon and much other variety of other compounds fill into the air. Locomotives and diesel engines in railways, motor engines of several kinds-all are pouring out all such impurities into the air.

                Thus air pollution, too, is harmful to the life of humanity and even to the existence of the world. One more danger-a more serious danger--to the existence of the humanity comes from nuclear fall outs To-day nuclear weapons of higher and higher powers are being produced and exploded on experiment basis. Though every care is taken to save the life on earth, the radio-active fall outs are scattered in the air which pollutes it at least to a limited area.

                Air-pollution can only be minimized by decreasing the growth of industries and dependence of men upon machines and automobiles and imposing a total check on the development of nuclear weapons. The pressure of thickly growing population is also necessary to minimize or eradicate the pollution of air or water.

                The drinking water for the public should be made free from any kind of pollution. Impurities of the industries should be prohibited from being discharged into the surface of water-river, tank or lake. If this is not possible, let the drinking water purified through chemical processes by the bodies responsible for public supply before it is supplied. The good water should possess certain desirable physical and chemical properties. The management of public water supply is also very essential. Though water-works authorities in India are responsible for purifying water, the Central board of prevention and control of water pollution and boards at state levels are trying to find out the technology and process of eradicating water pollution. Prime Minister Modi had set up a body to make the rivers Ganga and Yamuna free from pollution.
